Zak Crawley Claims Ignorance of Captain Stokes' Controversial 'Weak Men' Comments

The English opening batter Crawley has indicated he had no knowledge of statements made by captain Ben Stokes about the team environment not being "those lacking fortitude".

The all-rounder made this message in multiple conversations following England's defeat in the second match of the Ashes versus the Australians earlier this month.

In the lead-up to the third Test, where England are staring at defeat with a match to spare, the captain noted he had let his message to "circulate freely" among the playing group.

"I have completed the necessary discussions in recent days that I required," said the England leader.

However, following Crawley made a knock of 85 on the fourth day in the third Test, he stated: "I missed those remarks."

"I didn't see and wasn't really looking out for it. Our approach is to take anything stated in the press with a pinch of salt," he added.

Frank Discussions and Steady Philosophy

Stokes made the "weak men" observation after England were beaten in Brisbane to fall 2-0 down.

The England squad afterwards took a break to Noosa in the gap between the second and third Tests.

Prior to the Adelaide contest, Stokes revealed his players had held "raw" conversations and he had asked them to "display some fight" in their effort to remain in contention in the Ashes battle.

Yet, Crawley stated the guidance from Stokes and coach Brendon McCullum had remained in line with their previous tenure in leadership.

"It's been extremely upbeat, the same as always," said the opener. "The focus is on maintaining positivity, playing our brand, with great liberty. It felt like we were capable of an extraordinary feat entering this game."

Australia Close of Rapid Ashes Triumph

The opener's wicket late on Saturday was part of a decisive triple-strike by Australian spinner Lyon.

Lyon's triple strike in 20 deliveries – he also bowled Brook and Ben Stokes – left England six down for 207 chasing a notional target of 435.

Consequently, Australia require just four more wickets on the final day to secure an insurmountable 3-0 lead after three matches played.

A loss will extend England's drought in this country to 18 consecutive matches and condemn them to a fourth successive away Ashes loss.

This series is set to be decided in just 11 days of play – after England losing the first two Tests in rapid time each.

The last time 1921, when Australia sealed a series win in the UK in eight days, has the outcome of the Ashes urn been decided more swiftly. Australia have also won in 11 days on two other instances in the modern era.

"It's disheartening," said the batsman. "We came here to win the Ashes and we're staring down the barrel at this point."

"There will still be significant pride at stake and we will certainly approach it with that mindset," he continued.

"It's been difficult. They're a very, very good side. It was always going to be hard coming here to face them. They were the favourites coming in to it have demonstrated their quality."

Ollie Pope's Position In Question

While the opener's performance in Adelaide probably answers doubts about his short-term future in the England team, Ollie Pope looks under immense pressure for his spot in the Melbourne Test on Boxing Day.

Pope fell for 17 in England's second innings on Saturday, extending his modest returns versus the old enemy.

In sixteen Ashes knocks, Pope has failed to score a fifty and boasts an average of just 17.62.

A solitary other England player in over a century – Amiss – has played as many times in the top six in Ashes Tests and returned a poorer average.

However, the opener insisted any notion his teammate is under the microscope comes from "the media" – referring to the press – "and not within the team."

"We all know of his considerable talent," said Crawley. "He has had a productive year to be frank."

"He has produced several excellent innings. It is talk externally. There's no discussion like that regarding Pope amongst the players," Crawley finished.
