Wimbledon will follow the American and Australian Opens in implementing video review technology.
Replay technology will make its debut at Wimbledon for the 2025 edition.
Competitors are granted the option to challenge certain decisions made by the chair umpire, echoing the practice currently in place at each of the US Open and the Aussie major.
This technology will be operational on the main stadium and the number one court throughout the tournament and on the remaining featured courts when they are staging singles matches.
This move follows just a year after the All England Club implemented ELC, which effectively ended the centuries-old tradition of line judges.
Scope of Challenges
Competitors cannot to challenge the accuracy of the ELC system, but are allowed to ask for the official to review specific decisions, including:
- Whether a ball has double-bounced.
- If a shot made contact with an opponent's racquet or person during play.
- Possible hindrance at the conclusion of a rally.
Importantly, there will be no limit on the amount of reviews a player can ask for.
A Recent Example
A recent incident occurred in a recent tournament last week, where Daniil Medvedev used the video challenge against his opponent.
Draper admitted it was a difficult call for the umpire, but believed his rival had "played the rules quite well."
The umpire watched a video and ruled the player was responsible for interference, awarding the rally to his opponent.
Growing Trend
Video reviews are not exclusive to Grand Slams. It was adopted at the American major since 2023 and the Aussie Open since 2025.
Furthermore, it is becoming more common on the women’s WTA Tour, and by the coming year the men's ATP Tour plans to have the system in place at every one of its events.
Further Updates
Another change at Wimbledon this year will be the addition of graphical cues on scoreboards to support the verbal announcements from the ELC system.
This addresses situations where the crowd have sometimes been uncertain if a ball was out or in.
Finally, with precisely a century of days to go until the start of the tournament, organizers have further announced an expansion in daily capacity at the qualifiers in the qualifying venue.
