Tetris Couldn't Triumph at This Gaming Ceremony — A New Category May Address This Issue

Whenever a prominent honors show approaches, one notices a demand for introducing additional classifications to acknowledge underappreciated efforts and fill the spirits of enthusiasts with niche passions.

My colleague previously argued for a horror game category. That would be fantastic. The same goes for tabletop games, representing a passionate advocate's mission. However, I must insist if I try to elbow in front since similar to dedicated enthusiasts, there's a strong justification supporting my request stands as crucial and important of all. The demand is this: We need a classification for brain-teasing titles.

Categorizing Game Types

Classifying creative works defies precise measurement; opinions vary greatly, and inevitably spark debates resulting in unclear classifications. It's understandable that movie academies steer clear of genre categories. However, it represents a necessary evil in the world of interactive entertainment, which are so diverse it's challenging to consider them one unified medium.

For the full spectrum of achievement in video games to be recognized, and for games of all stripes to compete fairly, specific award classifications remain vital.

Existing Game Classification System

Leading game ceremonies offer these classifications covering Action, Action/Adventure, RPG experiences, Combat games, Sim/Strategy, plus athletic and racing experiences. Together, these six categories effectively encompass numerous genres, and you can find room for most games within them.

Different situation exists for logic-based experiences. No appropriate category exists to accommodate them. Consider three of recent excellent titles, all very different: the architectural riddles from a specific release, intense tile-matching in a different title, and the sweetly sociological logic puzzles in another game. What category would fit them among existing types? Simply put, no category fits.

The Representation Problem

Many instances occur excellent brain-teasers published annually that have no home in entertainment awards, unless they happen to qualify award groups including Mobile Game, Virtual reality experiences, or the extremely competitive independent game categories.

  • One classic puzzle game wasn’t nominated for anything that year
  • A different innovative game was excluded in 2019
  • A beloved organization game was overlooked that year
  • Limited numbers of brain-teasers managed to sneak into niche award types

Significance of Puzzle Games

Commonly they're modest productions, however the design in brain-teasers is of massive significance. Famous handheld logic titles count as most popular titles worldwide continuing this trend for over a decade.

The famous puzzle experience rivals popular creative games competing to become highest-selling title ever; it’s also in the running for top gaming experience. Puzzle games are foundational to the art of video games, and they are in conversation with almost every other genre.

Proposal and Rationale

Logic titles wouldn't face such difficulty. You could fill five nominees engaging, different, qualified experiences annually without trouble — perhaps, with difficulty, given the need to exclude many worthy titles.

And to reiterate, these represent titles lacking appropriate categories in important events. Brain-teaser creators function at the demanding boundary interactive creation, creating some of the purest expressions of gaming itself. Similar to cinema stunt performers, they merit acknowledgment. Let’s not keep them waiting 35 years.
