Seven individuals accused of being the left-wing extremist organization the Antifa Ost network began their trial on Tuesday, facing charges for violent actions against far-right activists that earned them the nickname “Hammer Gang”.
Global terrorist designation and legal charges
Recently, the United States designated Antifa Ost as a terrorist organization along with multiple additional European far-left and anarchist networks.
Authorities in Germany state the network was responsible for attacks on sites in Germany and Hungary between 2018 and 2023. Included in the allegations is the multiple attacks of a business proprietor in central Thuringia, whose venue reportedly served as a meeting point for far-right supporters.
Certain individuals are allegedly accused of employing hammers against presumed rightwing extremists, leaving some with serious injuries.
Trial details and international connections
The trial involving six men and one woman is scheduled to continue until July 2026 in the eastern city of Dresden, Germany. A pair of suspects, identified as Johann G. and Paul M., also face charges for violent incidents in Budapest during February 2023, around an annual event known as the “day of honour” that attracts far-right participants from throughout the continent.
Separately, another German activist, Maja T., is facing trial in Hungary for multiple charges of attempted assault against far-right activists in the lead-up to the identical event in that year.
Historical background and group hierarchy
Eastern Germany has long been a hotbed for both far-right and anti-immigrant youth organizations, as well as the frequently radical antifascist groups that counter them.
Prosecutors describe Johann G as a high-ranking member within the organization, responsible for planning attacks and recruiting accomplices.
Alongside Paul M, he is alleged to have arranged training sessions where leftwing extremists practised combat techniques and simulated violent actions. At depots overseen by the suspect, the network reportedly stockpiled tools, irritant sprays, disguises and communication devices.
Prior legal cases and global responses
Another militant previously active with the organization, Lina E, became a cause celebre within certain radical left communities following her conviction in 2023 for attacks on presumed far-right targets.
The US designation renders organization affiliates barred from entering the United States, blocks financial holdings they may have within the American economy and criminalizes offering assistance to them.
The German right-wing AfD party welcomed the US decision and urged the government in Berlin to take similar action. However, the German foreign ministry simply stated it had “taken note” of the US designation.
“The threat posed by the [Antifa Ost] group has recently decreased significantly. Key leaders and most aggressive participants have either already been convicted or are in custody.”
