Australia's captain Expected to Feature a Major Role in Iconic Rivalry

Test match action

The pace bowler has claimed 309 Test scalps in 71 appearances with an average of 22.10.

The Australian chair of selectors Bailey has declared that pace spearhead Cummins will play a "major part" in the upcoming England-Australia contest.

Rumors had circulated that the 32-year-old might be unavailable due to a persistent back stress problem that was still troubling him.

Earlier indications from the squad suggested no final decision had been made regarding Cummins' participation, with the five-Test series kicking off on November 21 in the WACA.

He revealed that his recovery is on track and was "optimistic" about the likelihood of being involved.

"We're aware that time is getting short and multiple considerations at play, not only his injury, but further aspects," the selector added.

"The outlook is good. [We are] really confident that he's going to play a significant role. Ideally from the opening match. If not, we'll reassess."

Injury History

He was sidelined Australia's limited-overs series against New Zealand and India in the previous weeks after scans revealed a lower back issue.

There is a track record of recurring issues, with flare-ups in multiple past seasons leading to absences from several home seasons in a short span.

Cummins stated he would be ""aggressive" and "take risks" in his comeback strategy to ensure his availability for the Ashes.

The selector indicated that he did not know if he had started his bowling workouts as part of his recovery but conceded it was "pressing" for him to regain fitness for the first Test.

Backup Options

In case of absence, former captain Steve Smith will lead the side.

All-rounder Cameron Green was withdrawn recently from the national team for their limited-overs matches against the subcontinent side as a preventive step because of discomfort in his torso.

The selector characterized it as a "minor" injury and stated that he'll feature in the domestic first-class competition, so will be "in a good place to resume bowling."

"Considerable effort has gone into building out the plan for him to be available for the first Test as an batting and bowling option," the selector detailed.

"He was only going to play the starting games regardless. How he handles the willow in shorter formats, even if it just sets him back for 24 more hours, we opted to approach this more conservatively."
